This summer, Susi London attended the prestigious Slade School of Fine Art, known globally for its rigorous, artist-led approach to contemporary art education.
In August this year, London’s historic Bloomsbury district played host to a vibrant cohort of international artists, among them Susi London, who attended the prestigious Painting Summer School at the Slade School of Fine Art. The Slade’s seasonal intensives have long been a crucible for developing practices, and this summer was no exception.
The Painting curriculum was tailored specifically for artists who already possess a foundational technique and are looking to push their creative boundaries. Set within the iconic Gower Street studios, the two-week intensive challenged participants to move beyond mere technical representation and to interrogate the deeper conceptual frameworks of their work.
Tutors included practicing contemporary artists from the Slade School of Fine Art community; Virginia Verran, Caroline De Lannoy, Sandra Smith, Kate Hopkins, Des Haughton, Flora Bradwell and Ian Rowlands.
Susi London’s time at the intensive was marked by an immersive exploration of medium and message and she used the studio time to experiment with bolder scales and new materiality, responding directly to the rigorous critiques of the Slade faculty.
For Susi London, the Slade Summer School represents a critical stepping stone—a focused window of isolation and intensity that allowed her to refine her visual voice. As the autumn season approaches, the works conceived in those high-ceilinged Bloomsbury studios are bound to influence her upcoming projects and exhibitions.
